David Tossell

'Thinkbot'
Local Author - book signing

10.30am- 12.30pm

Book signing by local author - David Tossell - his first book has been published and is available for £8.95. 'Thinkbot' is the story of a robot, the worlds first thinking, feeling being in a can. It is partially set in the local area of Portishead and is a story about a robot that owes his existence to a glitch in the Globalbot fabrication plant where all sorts of robots are created. He escapes and manages to find sanctuary in the dysfunctional family of its technical supreme GAT. David will be appearing at Read & Rite books on Saturday 18th March between 10.30am and 12.30pm, he will be talking about his book as well as signing copies of it.

Thinkbot is dramatic, manic and hilarious, David Tossell's novel is perceptive, a futuristic satire in which an all too recognizable present is projected into an awesome future.

Branch Lines to Clevedon and Portishead,

byVic Mitchell, 14.95

Middleton Press have added this title to their Branch Line set of books. This book highlights the Portishead line. It gives detailed images and information about the whole line as it was in its peak. Illustrated in detail are two ex-GWR branches that were close to passengers in the 1960s and also the Weston Clevedon & Portishead Railway, that linked them until 1940.This light railway had the quaint charm that was associated with other lines that became part of Colonel Stephen's empire. The complex lines to Bristol Harbour are also studied in detail, as is the new system in the Royal Portbury Dock.

The Portishaed Coal Boats

by Michael T Winter, 19.95

Beginning as a Deck Boy in 1955, Michael Winter spent nine years working on the O&W boats and the second half of the book details his experiences with the company. In a highly readable account, he explains the intricacies of loading coal at Newport and Ely, the unloading process back at Portishead and the many problems involved with working across the difficult waters of the Bristol Channel. The narrative is well illustrated with a marvellous collection of photographs assembled by the author over many years. The author also remembers, in words and pictures, the men with whom he worked. For nearly fifty years, the 'coal boats' kept the power stations at Portishead supplied, through appalling weather and wartime tribulations, and this book pays tribute to the unstinting efforts of all those involved.
